Dear Sir/Madam,
         
    I am using the SAS task 'mos-spectra' for the galaxy cluster A3395 (Obs. ID 
0400010301) and am getting the following output (only a part from the full
output is shown, rest is just a repetition of this). I checked for the
"mos1-2S-fwc.fits.gz" in the ccf directory and found them in the CCF directory
(as these files were not a part of the standard CCF download so i had copied
them from ftp://xmm.esac.esa.int/pub/ccf/constituents/extras/esas_caldb/). I am
surprised that the task does not find these files in the CCF and shows error. It
like this and does not produce the expected outputs ( files like
"mosprefix-*ff.pi", "mosprefix-*oc.pi" and "mosprefix-*fc.pi" are missing)

Dear Kiran,

It looks like the path where the files are stored might not
be set correctly. The error says that the following file can
not be found at:

media/ECFB-B220/XMM-Newton/caldb-download/ccf/mos1-2S-fwc.fits.gz

it looks to me that it should be:

/media/ECFB-B220/XMM-Newton/caldb-download/ccf/mos1-2S-fwc.fits.gz

Could you send me the call you use for the task mos-spectra?

You are right, these files have to be downloaded separately and are
needed to run the task you are using.

Let me know if that was the problem.

Hi,

Thanks a lot. Mos-spectra now works fine.

Though I did not find the following files in the output:

mos1S002-7obj.pi ,
mos1S002-6ff.pi , mos1S002-7ff.pi,
mos1S002-im6-*elow-ehigh*.fits , mos1S002-im7-*elow-ehigh*.fits,
mos1S002-7oc.pi,
mos1S002-6fc.pi,  mos1S002-7fc.pi

As is apparent from the images one of the CCDs in mos1 was not working. How
can I find which CCD # is that?

Also the task  pn-spectra does not work at all.

Dear Kiran,

Have a look at the XMM-Newton user guide. In this page you have an image
of the cameras with CCD numbers on it. In fact MOS1 is being missing
a CCD for a long time (#6).

Regarding pn-spectra, ESAS-pn related tasks although available in the SAs
distribution, do not work. Their implementation is under way. Sorry for the 
inconvenience this could cause.

The task requires as input the outputs of mos-spectra and pn-spectra.
Since pn-spectra is not available, you cannot use pn exposures with
this task. Try using only mos exposures and see if the task runs.

Could you send me the list of files present in your working
directory including the size of the files ? Simply run the
command: ls -lrt on the working directory. 

In the meantime let me point out to you that a new version of
the ESAS Cookbook has been made available yesterday. You can

Could I ask you why are you using such a complex expression for
the selection of, I assume, the source region ? For the production
of the spectral products the effective area needs to be compute,
and hence I would advice to use simpler geometrical forms,
such as a circle, ellipse or square. Let me know either wat
what you are trying to achieve.

Actually when I was trying to combine mos images using the task 'comb' I
didn't specify any region file and ran mos-spectra for the whole FOV. I did
the job for combining images and producing spectra (for the selected source
region) in two diffrent directories, so I have two different lists of files
produced. I have attached both of them. (There are some files used for
various shell scripts or region files the names for which may appear weird).

Though I now guess that the task 'comb' did not run because I tried it
without doing the spectral fitting which was required by the task 'proton'.
I am sorry for the inconvenience caused to you because of this. Is there any
way of combining images without doing the spectral fitting etc.?

The other  problem of producing spectrum for the source region, I can
produce spectrum very easily using 'evselect' but I want to produce spectrum
from the images with point sources removed (as this whole job is to study
the diffuse emission from this cluster  i.e. A3395). So, I found
'mos-spectra' a better option because it uses the outputs from the task
'cheese'. I tried to create a region file that covers the diffuse eission to
a sufficient extent. I used ds9 (I selected the coordinate type to Image)
and just copied those coordinates in this region file. I really doubt if it
is really because of the way I am selecting the source region though I will
try with some simple regions.

I  am not able to convert the image coordinates to detector coordinates. Can
you suggest me some way for doing this.
In ds9 when I try to save or list the regions the detector coordinate option
is not highlighted, it's always hidden.

You can use the SAS task xmmselect to open the event file. From there
you can create an image in whatever coordinates are available. This is
explained in the SAS Manual.

I suspect that your selection expression will work if instead of
(DETX,DETY) you use (X,Y). But you can double check by plotting
with xmmselect the image in X,Y (or DETX, DETY).

Thanks Ignacio,

Mos-spectra is now working very well, though it requires that the region
file be provided in the detector coordinates,
so I produced the detector image using xmmselect. It's working for simple as
well as complex region selection expressions.
Though I have not yet tried the comb task as it takes very long for each
mos-spectra run.
But I was wondering if there is any way to run pn-spectra. If not, then how
am I supposed to produce spectra from PN (with point sources removed).

Sorry but last time I ran mos-spectra only for MOS1. There it really worked
fine. I don't know what new has happened. I followed exactly the same
procedure for MOS2 also i.e. made an image in detector coordinates using
xmmselect, selected the region, made the region file in detector coordinates
& tried running mos-spectra. But, now it is giving the same warning i.e.

I found that the evselect : warning (NoFilteredEvents),  occurs many of the
times with  'mos-spectra' run (I got them with MOS2 as well as MOS2).

But, this time the spectra look fine.

. I am following the 'Cookbook for analysis procedures for XMM-NEWTON EPIC
MOS observations of extended objects and the diffuse background Version
4.0'. And my main aim is to make  a combined image from the detectors MOS1,
MOS2 & PN. I am trying to use the task 'comb' and am facing certain
difficulties and doubts in that :

1. In the description given for the task 'comb' in the cookbook says that
only the tasks  'mos-spectra', 'mos_back' & 'rot-im-det-sky' must have run
successfully for all exposures. But, in the recipe given at the end of the
cookbook suggests (in addition to these tasks) , fitting the MOS spectra to
find soft proton contamination parameters and then run the tasks
'proton_scale' and 'proton', before running 'comb'. Which one should I
follow? Also it's quite difficult to fit the spectra with so many
parameters.

2. I tried running 'comb' without doing the spectral fitting (only for MOS1
and MOS2 and with the parameters 'withpartcontrol' and 'withsoftcontrol' set
equal to 0) and got the following error :

Input array size not equal to image

(Is this because I had  ccd6=0 for MOS1 for both 'mos-spectra' and
'mos_back' whereas for MOS2 all ccds were set to 1)

3. Does 'comb' require 'pn-spectra' &  'pn_back' also to be run successfully
though it's not given in the description of 'comb'. If yes, then how can we
combine all PN, MOS1 & MOS2 together since pn-spectra ends with a lot of
errors.

The "warning (NoFilteredEvents)" comes up if the extraction
region excludes data from one or more CCDs.  Since the task
doesn't know ahead of time over which CCDs the region falls,
it still tries to extract data on a CCD by CCD basis. Its just
a warning.

To merge event and exposure images mos-spectra and/or pn-spectra
must have been successfully run for all exposures.  If particle
background images are to be merged mos_back and/or pn_back and
rot-im-det-sky must have been successfully run for all exposures.
To include soft proton images the soft proton spectrum must have
been fit and the tasks proton and rot-im-det-sky successfully run.
Inclusion of the QPB and SP images are selected in the command.

If comb was run with withpartcontrol=0 and withsoftcontrol=0,
the "Input array size not equal to image" message, indicates that
it must have not found the event image or the exposure image for 
one of the exposures. The error has nothing to do with what CCDs 
were selected.

comb uses an input exposure list to run. No pn processing
is required if no pn exposures are included.

Let me remind you that analysis of EPIC-pn is not included in 
ESAS yet.

Actually, I have tried running 'comb' without any PN exposure included and I
am again getting the same error i.e.

I thought that this may be because the region selection expression for MOS1
and MOS2 were different (From the description of the task 'comb' given in
http://xmm.esac.esa.int/sas/current/doc/comb/index.html one of the outputs
produced by comb is a combined count image for the *prefix* exposure,
selected energy band (elow and ehigh), and the *selected region* in sky
coordinates.

So, I tried running it for the whole FOV i.e. without specifying any region
file but got the same error once again.

I have checked that none of the exposure image or event image is missing for
both mos1 and mos2. I have attached the list of files generated.
The total command list is also attached as the second attachment.

I can see that the input directory is missing a /

/media/ECFB-B220/XMM-Newton/caldb-download/ccfscale-factors.fits.gz

it should be:

/media/ECFB-B220/XMM-Newton/caldb-download/ccf/scale-factors.fits.gz

The quick solution is to enter:

/media/ECFB-B220/XMM-Newton/caldb-download/ccf/

instead of:

/media/ECFB-B220/XMM-Newton/caldb-download/ccf

I dont know if this will solve your other problem.
