When I run mos-spectra with

mos-spectra 1S001 ../caldb 0 0 0 1 1 1 1 1 1 1

I get an error that says


** evselect: error (copyDataSetFailed), It was not possible to copy the
dataset with name '/mos1-1S-fwc.fits.gz' to 'filtered.fits' because
'/mos1-1S-fwc.fits.gz' does not exist.

followed by a bunch of other errors resulting from this one.

I checked if mos1-1S-fwc.fits.gz is in the caldb directory... and it's
there... but I believe that slash shouldn't be part of the filename.

Is there some way to fix this... or am I just using mos-spectra incorrectly?

I run SAS 9.0.0 on a Linux machine.

Dear Georgiana,

The call you are making to mos-spectra is how it used to be done
when ESAS was a stand alone package. Now that it is integrated 
in SAS, the call should be made following the SAS standards.

If you do:
 
 mos-spectra -p

you will get a list of parameters and how to use them. 
One more thing, using the SAS standard, you do not need to make 
a reference to the location of caldb.

I think this should fix your problem. Let me know if anything
is not clear.

The parameters I get when doing

$ mos-spectra -p

are the ones I've been using previously. It says:

mos-spectra prefix fwc_dir verbosity regfile elow ehigh c(7)

so that's what I am doing, I think, when calling mos-spectra with

$ mos-spectra 1S001 0 reg.txt 0 0 1 1 1 1 1 1 1

It doesn't make any difference if I include or leave out the path to
caldb... I still get the same error.

Dear Georgiana,

I am in the process of running the analysis myself to reproduce
your error and I have got to your stage. The set of files *fwc*
are needed by the task. Could you check if this set of files is 
in your caldb directory ? If not, you can download them from:

http://xmm2.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_sw_cal/background/filter_closed/index.shtml

for both MOS and pn.

Let me know if you had them or not, and if so, if this
solves the problem.

You can then define the corresponding environment variable to
point to the ESAS calibration library (where the *fwc* files
should be) or run mos-spectra with the option:

 caldb='[path-to-calib-files]'

This worked for me.

Dear Ignacio,

That indeed got rid of the problem with finding the FWC files. However, some
of the other errors are still there. For example, evselect gives me an error
saying:

** evselect: error (FITSIO), FITS error 112: cannot write to readonly file
cannot open compressed file with WRITE access (mem_compress_open)

I attached the new log files.

That is a FITSIO error rather than SAS. The error code points 
at an error in the file/directory permissions. It could be that
the directory where the calibration files are needs to have
writing permissions. Could you check along this line ? In the 
meantime I will try and pinpoint where or which file is being
trying to access at that stage.

Dear Gerogina,

I am including here the output (only the begining) of my call to
mos-spectra. I have even used regfile=reg.txt where reg.txt does
not exist like in your call.
(if you want to use it, the file reg.txt should contain an
extraction region written in the form of: 
&& (DETX,DETY) IN circle(469,503,517))

As you can see, my call to backscale does not produce any errors
like it does in your case. I have not been able to reprodcue the
error, so I cant tell you what it is without looking into your 
computer. There must be something still missing in the way your
variables are set.

Maybe you could start from scratch on a new terminal.

Let me know if I can help some other way.
