Subject: XMM RPS from Windows
Full_Name: Jean Ballet
Submission from: (NULL) (132.166.41.228)

When proceeding to enter the details for my AO-7 proposal, I noticed that I
could not enter the RPS system from my Windows laptop using Internet Explorer.
When trying to access http://xmmrps.esac.esa.int/, I get stuck with a page on
which I see only a Remote Proposal Submission System link.
When I click on it, it tries to access
http://xmmrps.esac.esa.int/cgi-bin/RPS/XMM-Newton/RPS.pl, but says the page
cannot be found.
On the other hand, firefox on linux or mozilla on Solaris lead me directly
(without any intermediate stage) to http://xmmrps.esac.esa.int/wphrp_menu.asp

Dear Dr. Ballet,

it seems that your Internet Explorer is pointing to an old
page from your browser cache, this is not the current RPS web page.
To refresh the cache please hit:
  <shift>-Refresh in Internet Explorer

Best regards,

Nora

Dear Nora,
Interesting...
Doing <shift>-Refresh did not work, but emptying the entire cache did
work.
I must admit that I don't understand what this means (is that a bug in Internet
Explorer or a logic hole in the way your web page is configured?) but thanks
anyway.
Jean

This is how browsers work. For this reason in our RPS web page we
recommend to clear the Cache before doing anything (see Cache Settings at
http://xmmrps.esac.esa.int/wphrp_rpstips.asp)

Dear Nora,
OK, it is written clearly indeed.
But because I never even got to the RPS page I did not get a chance to access
the doc and I did not find it immediately from the main SOC site.
Maybe it could be added to the list of documents under XMM-Newton Proposer's
Info and Manuals.
All the best,
Jean

You are right, we will see to put a link there.

Thank you for your suggestions,

Nora
