Dear Ankur,

Regarding XMM-Newton data extraction and reduction I encourage you to visit the
following page, where you may find several step-by-step threads on how to use
SAS for specific purposes:

https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-threads

More specifically, the following threads might be of your interest:

* SAS initialization and start-up:

https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-thread-startup

* Extraction of event files:

https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-thread-epic-reprocessing

* Extraction of a lightcurve:

https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-thread-timing

Hope that this helps. Do not hesitate in contacting us again should you have
further questions.

Best regards,
Jacobo

Thanks for the reply. But I am having problem understanding the syntax of t=
he command line format. For the event files, should I just write epproc for=
pn data, because that is showing me some error. Or should I act it on the =
SAS/ODF file extracted. The instructions in the website are not clear enoug=
h.

Thank you.

Dear Ankur,

Yes, to extract the EPIC-pn event files you just need to run epproc. This can be
executed anywhere provided that the SAS environmental variables have been set up
as mentioned in the start-up thread:

https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-thread-startup

In summary the steps to be followed are:

1) Download and untar your ODF

2) Initialize Heasoft and SAS (the order matters)

3) Define the ODF environment (e.g. setenv SAS_ODF /path/to/your/ODF/)

4) Run cifbuild

5) Define the CCF variable: setenv SAS_CCF /path/to/CCF/ccf.cif

6) Run odfingest

7) Re-define the ODF environment so that it points to the *SUM.SAS file created
by odfingest

8) When this is done you can proceed with the extraction of the data (event
files, spectra, etc).

If after doing this you still have problems please send us the error message and
the complete list of commands you have used.

Best regards,
Jacobo

Dear Ankur,

Did you untar all the files in your ODF? Could you please let me know what are
the contents of the directory where you have your ODF saved?

Regards,
Jacobo

Yeah now it's working. When I unzipped all the files, it generated event fi=
les.

However I am facing a new problem now. While using xmmselect, it says that =
ds9 cannot be launched and so I am not able to see the image. I have separa=
tely downloaded SAO ds9 for this on my Mac.

My event files are generated in FITS format. And according to the instructi=
ons, I am inputting it but the image is not getting displayed. I will be gr=
ateful for your help asap.

Regards,
Ankur

Dear Ankur,

That might be a problem in the interface that SAS uses to communicate with ds9.
Please make sure that you have the latest version of xpa installed as specified
in the SAS software requirements here:

https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-requirements

Best regards,
Jacobo

Dear Ankur,

The event files are created for an exposure on a given camera. From that you can
create an image of the exposure, and from that image you may generate spectra
and lightcurves from any individual source in your image.

Regards,
Jacobo

Yeah I understood that part. But if instead of creating a single event file=
containing information about all the sources, suppose I want to single out=
the data for separate sources so that I can work on it later, can I do tha=
t using SAS?
Is there any other way you can probably refer to do that.

Thank you .

Dear Ankur,

No, as I said event lists created with epproc and emproc are per instrument and
exposure. You may choose to disable certain CCDs or filter the events defining
good time intervals, but there is not such thing as an event list for individual
sources.

Jacobo

Dear Ankur,

Event files from different instruments cannot be merged, as their reduction
procedure is different for MOS and pn. What can be merged are the output images,
as described in a number of threads here:

https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-threads

Best regards,
Jacobo

Dear Prof.,

I was recently trying multixmmselect to produce an individual light curve f=
rom different exposures of the same observation Id. But when I am clicking =
on ogip rate curve option in the GUI of multixmmselect, I am getting an err=
or like a file named rates0.ds cannot be found.

Can you please guide me on how to produce the merged lightcurve.

Thanking you
Ankur

Dear Ankur,

Without knowing what steps you followed exactly it is difficult to tell what the
error could be. Examples on the usage of multixmmselect can be found here:

https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-thread-multiexposures

For lightcurves, just follow the instruction in the last step (#8). Note that in
this way you would extract the individual lightcurves at once, but not a single
merged lightcurve.

Regards,
Jacobo
