I use evselect to generate a spectrum. When I use backscale, arfgen, and rmfgen
on this resulting spectral file I get an "abort trap: 6" for the MOS data but
not the pn data for this observation, e.g.:

Hello,

the error seems to point to an installation issue. In order to analyse the
problem in detail, SAS experts will need to know the operating system and the
binary downloaded for installation .

Hi,

apparently you are running SAS15 on "El Capitan". This OS was released soon
after SAS15 (built on Yosemite) and it was early found that a security framework
named System Security Protection (SIP) was causing problems in the execution of
SAS. The workaround found was to disable such system:

# csrutil status
# csrutil disable

Even in the case that this solution works we strongly encourage to move on to
the latest SAS version  (SAS17), compatible with El Capitan (see
https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-download ). 

Note that SIP still needs to be disabled (i.e. csrutil disable) to make SAS17
run.
