Dear XMM helpdesk team,

I'm trying to use XMM images, so I installed and initialized SAS (and FTOOLS
either).
I followed the procedure described in
https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-thread-startup,
and it worked fine, except that when I execute odfingest, it gave me warning
NoScienceFile.
I don't know what that means. I downloaded ODF file from NXSA, observation
number 0554370101, and set ODF path to that folder. Cifbuild worked fine.
So next I tried to follow
https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-thread-epic-reprocessing,
but I got this

HYUNJU-MACPRO:sas jjung11$ emproc

Dear Jaewoong Jung,

First of all, note that the e-mail address 'google@alaska.edu'
does not work, so I am answering to the address of your previous
message.

With respect to the error:

"NoScienceFile"

Could you please check that you have correctly unpacked the tar
files with the ODF?

There is an additional problem. You get the error:

dyld: Library not loaded:
/Volumes/SAS/sasbuild/build/xmac01/GNU_CC_CXX_7.1/reltrack_rel_7.1_build/lib/libmetatask.1.97.dylib
  Referenced from: /Users/jjung11/sas/sas_17.0.0-Darwin-16.7.0-64/xmmsas_20180620_1732/bin/atthkgen
  Reason: image not found

This problem might be related to the System Integrity
Protection (SIP) included in the Mac OS.
It is addressed in the following SAS watchout:

https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-watchout-1600-sip

Dear Sir,

Sorry for mail address mistake.

About the NoScienceFile problem,

From the NXSA, I downloaded the ODF file of observation number 0554370101.
It gave me the file '0554370101.tar.gz' and I unpacked it on
/Users/jjung11/Desktop/Research/XMM_images/0554370101/, getting several
files and one .tar file. I also unpacked that tar file within there.
Before running odfingest, my environment variables were

SAS_DIR =
/Users/jjung11/sas/sas_17.0.0-Darwin-16.7.0-64/xmmsas_20180620_1732

SAS_PATH =
/Users/jjung11/sas/sas_17.0.0-Darwin-16.7.0-64/xmmsas_20180620_1732

SAS_CCFPATH = /Users/jjung11/ccf

SAS_CCF = /Users/jjung11/SAS/ccf.cif

SAS_ODF = /Users/jjung11/Desktop/Research/XMM_images/0554370101/

and I ran odfingest.

I got

odfingest:- Executing (routine): odfingest odfdir=. withodfdir=no outdir=.
summaryfile=0000_0000000000_SCX000SUM.SAS usecanonicalname=yes
writepath=yes findinstrumentmodes=yes usehousekeeping=yes oalcheck=no  -w 1
-V 4

odfingest:- odfingest (odfingest-3.31)  [xmmsas_20180620_1732-17.0.0]
started:  2018-09-18T00:37:15.000

odfingest:- Looking for ODF constituents in
/Users/jjung11/Desktop/Research/XMM_images/0554370101/

odfingest:- Identified the following ODF

Revolution:  1744

Observation: 0554370101

Proposal:    0554370101

** odfingest: warning (NoScienceFiles), There appear to be no science files
in this observation. I'll try to determine its duration from whatever other
files I could find.

odfingest:- odfingest (odfingest-3.31)  [xmmsas_20180620_1732-17.0.0] ended:
  2018-09-18T00:37:15.000

And it created .SAS file, so I set export
SAS_ODF=/Users/jjung11/SAS/1744_0554370101_SCX00000SUM.SAS.

Then I tried to run emproc, but the result was the same I copied down in
previous request.

Is there something wrong?

Regards,

Jaewoong

Dear Jaewoong Jung,

Could you please send me the result of

ls -altr /Users/jjung11/Desktop/Research/XMM_images/0554370101/

Also please try these commands (I assume that your working directory is
/Users/jjung11/SAS/):

rm ccf.cif

rm 1744_0554370101_SCX00000SUM.SAS

SAS_CCF = /Users/jjung11/Desktop/Research/XMM_images/0554370101/
SAS_ODF = /Users/jjung11/Desktop/Research/XMM_images/0554370101/

cifbuild

SAS_CCF = ccf.cif

odfingest

SAS_ODF = 1744_0554370101_SCX00000SUM.SAS

This should work. Let me know if this is not the case

Regards

Rosario

Dear Jaewoong,

You have to un-tar the file 1744_0554370101.TAR in your working directory.

Dear Rosario Gonzalez Riestra,

Thanks a lot.
It seemed to work. I also solved 'library not loaded' problem.
However, the guide says that emproc should generate

   - ????_??????????_AttHk.ds, the reconstructed attitude file
   - ????_??????????_EPN_????_01_Badpixels.ds, one table per reduced CCD
   containing the bad pixels
   - ????_??????????_EPN_????_ImagingEvts.ds, the calibrated and
   concatenated event list, which shall be used as an input to extract
   scientific products via evselect
   <https://xmm-tools.cosmos.esa.int/external/sas/current/doc/evselect/index.html>
    or xmmselect
   <https://xmm-tools.cosmos.esa.int/external/sas/current/doc/xmmselect/index.html>
   .

or similar files. But I only got ~AttHk.ds file. I think I should get third
file to get events list. How I can get the rest of them?

The result I got from emproc is following:

Dear Jaewoong,

The task 'emproc' is not able to find the input files for the processing.

Could you please send me the result of

ls  -altr /Users/jjung11/Desktop/Research/XMM_images/0554370101/

(you should have there approx 180 files.

Dear Jaewoong,

I am afraid that I cannot fully understand where the problem is.

May I ask you to follow exactly this procedure:

- Go to a new, EMPTY directory
- initialise SAS
- SAS_CCF = /Users/jjung11/Desktop/Research/XMM_images/0554370101/
- SAS_ODF = /Users/jjung11/Desktop/Research/XMM_images/0554370101/
- cifbuild
- SAS_CCF = ccf.cif
- odfingest
- SAS_ODF = 1744_0554370101_SCX00000SUM.SAS
- emproc

Regards

Rosario

Dear Rosario Gonzalez Riestra,

Thanks, it worked after moving into new directory.
But for sure, can you tell me what was the trouble?

Previous folder was like this:

total 2364200

Dear Jaewoong,

I'm glad it worked.

As I said in previous message, I am afraid that I do not understand the reason
of the problem, though I suspect it was due to a mistake in the definition of
the environment variables SAS_CCF and/or SAS_ODF.

Regards

Rosario
