Dear Helpdesk,

<my analysis environment>

SAS release:xmmsas_20170719_1539-16.1.0
Platform:Ubuntu16.04 64
data ID:0200130101

I want to analyze the data which ID is 0200130101.
I ran following tasks
cifbuild
odfingest
emchain
epchain
epchain withoutoftime=ture
mos-filter
pn-filter

but pn-filter can not run and I received the following message.
How can I solve this?

Dear Kai Yu,

Right after running 'epchain' and 'epchain withoutoftime=true" the following
files should exist in your working directory:

P0200130101PNS012OOEVLI0000.FIT
P0200130101PNS012PIEVLI0000.FIT
P0200130101PNU002OOEVLI0000.FIT
P0200130101PNU002PIEVLI0000.FIT

If they do not exist, 'pn-filter' will fail.

Since 'pn-filter' renames the files, it is a would idea to keep always a copy of
these four files so that they can be used if pn-filter needs to be re-run.

In summary, please run epchain again from scratch, make a copy of these four
files, and run pn-filter.

Please let us know if this does not solve the problem.

Rosario GOnzalez-Riestra

Dear Rosario,

Thank you for your reply.

I ran "epchain" again, and I got the "P0200130101PNS012PIEVLI0000.FIT" only=
.

I don't know why I couldn't get "P0200130101PNU002PIEVLI0000.FIT".

Dear Kai Yu,

This observations has two EPIC-pn exposures, named S012 and U002 (you can check
it with 'odfbrowser').

Exposure S012 is taken with the 'CALCLOSED' filter, therefore it does not
contain science data. The one with the target data is exposure U002.

As explained in the 'esas' Manual

http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/xmm/esas/cookbook/xmm-esas.html

"epchain by default will create event files for only the
first imaging exposure and must be run explicitly
calling out the exposure number if there are multiple
exposures (e.g., epchain exposure=2)."

Therefore to process all the data, you should run 'epchain' four times:

epchain
epchain withoutoftime=true

will create

P0200130101PNS012PIEVLI0000.FIT
P0200130101PNS012OOEVLI0000.FIT

epchain exposure=2
epchain exposure=2 withoutoftime=true

will create

P0200130101PNU002PIEVLI0000.FIT
P0200130101PNU002OOEVLI0000.FIT

You can then run 'pn-filter' (note, as I said in my message of yesterday that
this task will rename the files). Also 'pn-filter' will not process the data
from exposure 'S015' as they do not contain science data.

Regards,

Rosario

Dear Rosario,

Thank you for your reply.
I have understood your comment, and I run epchain again with "exposure=3D2"=
.

After then, I got P0200130101PNU002PIEVLI0000.FIT, and pn-filter ran
successfully.

I am grateful for your prompt reply, thank you so much !!!

Dear Rosario,

Thank your for a useful advice you gave me the other day.

I have a question.

when do I use "calclosed" event file ?

Are "calclosed" event files essential?

My analysis are imaging and spectral analysis, and I refer following
webpage.

https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-thread-esasimage
https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-thread-mos-spectrum

"calclosed" event files do not appear in the procedure on this page.

Regards,

Kai Yu
