Dear Sirs,

I want to use the SAS task "multixmmselect" to obtain a single source spectrum
(with the applicable background spectrum, response matrix and ancillary file)
from the datasets of three EPIC cameras. I managed to use this task with the
datasets of the two MOS cameras but not with those of the PN one. I've tried
with the data of different observations and even with only one dataset from the
PN camera (i.e. without any MOS). In any case the task manages to produce the
source and background spectra but fails to calculate the .rmf and .arf files.
The program stops always with the error message "Escpeget error". I would
emphasize that on the same PN datasets the task "especget" works correctly when
it is run out of "multixmmselect", providing the expected results.

Could you please provide me any suggestion to solve this problem?

Dear Nora,

thank you for your response. I use SAS 16.0 on a PC with OS Linux Suse 
Leap 42.2. In the attachment I send you the mosaic image of the three 
observations and the log with the messages obtained 
while the multixmmselect task was running. It includes no error messages, 
but execution stops abruptly with the opening of a box reporting just 
"Especget error".

The three datasets (PN, MOS1 and MOS2) were all in Full Frame mode, and 
the parameters of the source and background extraction regions were
(RA,DEC) IN circle(265.463,-17.9323,0.0120833)
and
(RA,DEC) IN circle(265.458,-18.0725,0.0120833)
respectively.

I'm sorry but I have no other information. Please let ne know if there is 
anything I can do to obtain further information.

I forwarded your message to SAS developers and they could reproduce
and understand the problem. Here is their reply:

We fear that there is no workaround solution for the problem you are pointing
to, and this has to do with the PI range selection. Since version 2.3 rmfgen has
a new parameter ("acceptchanrange") which by default is FALSE. This parameter
has been introduced for the users to be conscious about the usage of a
"non-standard" channel range, which under certain circumstances can produce less
accurate response matrices. In the combination of different spectra from
multixmmselect, the spectral range for PN is pitifully non-standard for
conserving homogeneity (and it is not possible to correct this from the standard
interface), and therefore multiespecget should be calling rmfgen in those cases
with acceptchanrange=TRUE. Running only with MOS spectra without changing the PI
selection works. 
We will solve this issue with SAS 17, the version which will be released in a
few weeks (foreseen for early May).
