Subject: ds9 fails
Full_Name: Ray Murphy
Submission from: (NULL) (136.206.84.6)

Hi,
I have installed SAS (16.1.0) & Heasoft (6.22.1) on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

When I run ds9 (in a tcsh) before I run heainit & sasinit it works fine.
When I
run heainit and then run ds9 it fails with the following message:

:~> ds9
Error in startup script: can't find package xml
    while executing
"package require xml"
    ("x11" arm line 9)
    invoked from within
"switch $ds9(wm) {
    x11 {
        # set to absolute path so that if -cd command is used,
        # so we can still find our files
        set ds9(root) [file normalize [..."
    (file "/usr/share/saods9/library/ds9.tcl" line 197)

I have followed the instructions described as follows from other entries but the
problem remains:

Is there another solution?

Thanks,

Dear Ray

We are not responsible for ftools and heainit.
Does this happen also after you initiate SAS?

Regards
Simone

Hi Ray,

can you please also do the following:

1. Open a new fresh terminal, and just issue the command env to produce a dump
of the whole list
of environment variables, to a file. Something like

$ env > first_env.txt 2>&1

The 2>&1 means to send to the same output file (first_env.txt) the
standard
output (2) and the
standard error (1) streams.

2. Now, initialize heasoft, e.g. sourcing headas-init.sh or using an alias to
it, etc.
Then repeat the command env but sending the output to a second file, as for
example

$ env > second_env.txt 2>&1

3. Now finally, initialise SAS by sourcing the setsas.sh command produced during
the SAS install.
Then repeat the command env and send the output to a third output file, as
follows

$ env > third_env.txt 2>&1

And please send us the three output files.

Thanks
Simone

Hi Simone,
When I enter the second and third commands I get the following:

cheetah:~> env > second_env.txt 2>&1
Ambiguous output redirect.
cheetah:~> env > third_env.txt 2>&1
Ambiguous output redirect.
cheetah:~>

However, I've attached the first one and a text output of env for the
second and third which I cut & pasted into a text file from the screen. Is
that ok?

Thanks,
Ray

Hi Ray,

we don't seem to find any obvious problem.

Can you please let me know also the DS9 version that you have installed and the
actual version of
Ubuntu OS that you have installed in your machine? Not the SAS version that you
downloaded, but
your OS.

Thanks
Simone

Hi Ray,

that is likely the issue: ds9 should be an executable.

May I ask you to download ds9 again? Please go to the original SAOImage website,
not Ubuntu's, and download the version 7.5 for Linux Ubuntu 16:

http://ds9.si.edu/site/Download.html

Install it and try again.
Let me know if you still have problems.

Thanks
Simone

Thanks Simone,
That seems to work.

Best,
Ray
