Hi there,

I have used the "images" script to process the EPIC data. Could you please reply
me what is the unit of final image ie. exposure corrected combine image? is it
photon / cm2 / s or counts/sec? I could not find it in its website.

Thank you

Cheers, -Viral

Dear Viral,

all SAS tasks are described here:
https://xmm-tools.cosmos.esa.int/external/sas/current/doc/packages.All.html
The output units should be given there, if not we are interested to know so we
can fix that.

There is no "images" script in that list, can you be more specific which script
you mean?

If you mean the thread
   https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/images
then this is not to produce images for scientific exploration but only for nice
images for the XMM-Newton Gallery.

There is another thread to produces images under:
https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-thread-images

Best wishes,
Jan-Uwe Ness

Hi

Thanks for your reply. Yes I just want to make nice image for overlay with radio
image. So I used https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/images script to
combine EPIC images and generate exposure corrected map. Now I want to overlay
radio contours and just for display purpose want to use XMM image. In this
overlay image I need unit of exposure corrected image.

Thank you

Cheers, -Viral

Dear Viral,

overlaying other images is beyond the scope of this script, but I don't see why
you need the units of the exposure-corrected image. It should be possible to
overlay, e.g., with ds9?

Jan-Uwe

Hi,

Yes its possible to overlay for example radio contours on X-ray image made with
"script" pipeline. On this overlay image, I want to show X-ray intensity
colorbar for which I need its unit. One more thing for which I am not clear is
that would you recommend to use cleaned events file generated by this script for
spectrum analysis?
I have not much experience of XMM-Newton data analysis, so is there any other
pipeline script(s) you suggests to use for spectral analysis?

Thank you

Cheers, -Viral

Dear Viral,

the images produced by this script are not calibrated to flux. The brightness
values in each image pixel scale of course with the X-ray intensity, but there
are a lot of rough estimates on the way, and determining fluxes in each image
bin requires knowledge of a spectral model.

For the cleaning, there is some description in the readme file
http://www.cosmos.esa.int/documents/332006/641121/README.pdf
e.g., Section 5.

There is another thread to produce images:
https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-thread-images
based on emimageget:
https://xmm-tools.cosmos.esa.int/external/sas/current/doc/eimageget/index.html
but it also gives no flux units. If you apply all corrections you can get a
count rate image, but beyond that is not possible.

For a quantitative spectral analysis, it would be better to extract spectra from
selected regions of interest and create count spectra plus response and
effective areas and perform spectra analysis directly with the spectra. There is
no way to provide a generic script because too much depends on the properties of
the individual source and the scientific goals of the analysis.

 Best wishes,
Jan-Uwe Ness
