Dear Sir/Madam:

Hi! I am writing to ask you something about RGS observation.

Recently I focus on the spectra of H 2356-309 (an AGN). But after standard
processing the original data, I found that there are only RGS1 files of the
observation 0504370701. When I referred to my previous request #85382 for RGS
(http://xmm.esac.esa.int/xmmhelp?findid=85382), Pedro said there was something
wrong with RGS 2 during the observation 0504370701. This problem was fixed and
XMM-Newton had an unscheduled observation for RGS2 later.

Since I need to make sure whether I should take the RGS2 data into consideration
or not in my project, could you please tell me what kind of problem occurred
during observation 0504370701? I worry that this problem would affect my final
result.

thanks!

Sincerely,
Dawei Zhong

Dear Dawei Zhong,

sorry for not being clear enough in previous message:

At the start of scheduled exposure S005 for RGS2 there were some problems with
the Analog-to-Digital-Converter.

Then, the scheduled exposure R2S005 was interrupted after 114 seconds.

After the problem was fixed, a new RGS2 exposure was started with a correct
instrument setup. This correct exposure was identified as unscheduled R2U002

The unscheduled R2U002 exposure was correctly processed in the pipeline, so that
it is available in the XMM-Newton Science Archive.

Anyway, it can be reprocessed with SAS as :

rgsproc withinstexpids=yes instexpids=R2U002

Finally, as no problem was reported during the execution of the exposure or at
processing with SAS, the exposure R2U002 should be valid for science analysis.

Nevertheless, if you find some problems to analyze the data, please send us a
detailed description of the issues found so that RGS experts can investigate
them in more detail.

Sincerely,

Pedro
