Subject: Only RGS1 spectra file?

Submission from: (NULL) (193.147.152.102)

Dear Sir/Madam:

Hi! I am writing to ask you something about the RGS observation.

Recently I focus on the spectra of H 2356-309 (an AGN). But after standard
processing the original data, I found that there is only RGS1 files of the
observation 0504370701. I have no idea whether there is some problem of this
data, because all other observations of H 2356-309 have both RGS1 and RGS2
spectra files. I am wondering what happen to the observation 0504370701,
thanks!

Sincerely,
Dawei Zhong

Dear Dawei Zhong

due to some problems with the RGS2 instrument the scheduled exposure during
observation 0504370701 had to be interrupted. After fixing the issue, the
exposure was re-started and got a different id. In summary, there are three
different RGS exposures within observation 0504370701:

RGS1 S004 130523 seconds
RGS2 S005 114 seconds
RGS2 U002 92176 seconds

rgsproc task process all scheduled RGS exposures (e.g. R{1,2}Sxxx) by default.
Only in the cases where there is no scheduled exposure it processes by default
unscheduled exposures, if exits.

The case of 0504370701 is rather unusual as there exist both scheduled AND
unscheduled exposures.

A Software Problem Report has been open to fix this behaviour of rgsproc.

Sincerely,

Pedro Rodriguez
