Subject: RGS background RMF

To whom it may concerns:

Hi! I am writing to ask the RMF of RGS background.

I hope to model my RGS background for my analysis with Xspec. Xspec 12 seems to
require user to specify the RMF of background. However, I have no idea whether
RGS background has its own RMF. So my question is, can I use the spectrum RMF
(e.g., P0504370701R1S004RSPMAT1001.FIT for ObsID 0504370701) as background RMF
to fit my background, or I need to generate a background RMF file and use it?

Thanks for your help!

Best,
Dawei

Dear Dawei,

The RMF describes the response of the instrument as a function of energy in a
given observation, so in principle you may use the matrix obtained as output by
rgsproc. It must be noted however that in general modeling of the RGS background
alone is of limited scientific interest as it tends to be very low with respect
to the actual source spectrum.

Best regards,
Jacobo
