Hello,

This is actually a simple question or rather correction.

We have noticed two webpages relating to XMM data files.

http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_user_support/documentation/dfhb/pps.html

with the contents title --- Pipeline data products: PPS 

Here we see that for the RGS data files "SRSPEC" denotes background subtracted
spectrum.

SRSPEC 	RGS Background-subtracted Source Spectrum (FTZ,PDF, if II=R[1,2])

Then on another webpage relating to XMM RGS analysis

http://xmm.esac.esa.int/sas/current/documentation/threads/rgs_thread.shtml

It sayas that once rgsproc is run as far as lightcurve. the following files
would be created in the working directory.

***SRSPEC**.FIT first[second] order source+background spectrum.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

So the question is: are the files in the PPS directory for  the RGS 1,2 order
1,2
backgorund subtracted and the spectra that comes out of "rgsproc" are not
background subtracted though almost with the same  denoted abbreviation
"SRSPEC".

We confirm you that this file, as produced by the Pipeline, is a background
subtracted spectrum.

This output of rgsproc is by default a source+background spectrum but
the user can change the parameters to obtain a background subtracted
spectrum, and by default will get the same output file name. The users
can always change the name of the output file, not calling it *SRSPEC*.
