Hello,

I want to make a light curve that represents the background contribution
to the first order RGS spectrum over a certain wavelength range. I am 
able to make normal RGS light curves for wavelength band using, e.g.,

evselect table=r1_evt1.fits \ 
         expression='region(r1_src.fits:RGS1_SRC1_SPATIAL,BETA_CORR,XDSP_CORR)
&& \
         region(r1_src.fits:RGS1_SRC1_ORDER_1,BETA_CORR,PI) && M_LAMBDA
>= 5.0
&& \   
         M_LAMBDA < 10.0' \
         withrateset=yes rateset="ltcrv_r1_1_5-10_10s.fits" timebinsize=10 \
         maketimecolumn=yes makeratecolumn=yes

I also know that the region RGS1_BACKGROUND exist. My question is to what
background 
region does this correspond? Is this defined in the spatial (i.e., BETA_CORR and
XDSP_CORR) domain and thus covers all orders? or is it defined in the energy 
(i.e., BETA_CORR,PI) domain. I must assume that it is define in the
spatialdomain since there is only one BACKGROUND region.

So how do I get to the background that is contributing to just the first (or
second) order?????

Any suggestions welcome,

Dear Dr. Hoogerwerf,

The region RGS1_BACKGROUND is only defined in the spatial domain (the same as 
RGS1_SRC1_SPATIAL). 

Therefore you can build the 1st order light curve for the background in a
similar way as you do for the source:


evselect table=r1_evt1.fits \ 
     expression='region(r1_src.fits:RGS1_BACKGROUND,BETA_CORR,XDSP_CORR)
&& \
         region(r1_src.fits:RGS1_SRC1_ORDER_1,BETA_CORR,PI) &&
M_LAMBDA>= 5.0 &&
\   
         M_LAMBDA < 10.0' 

  .... etc
