Hello,
I have a RGS observation from April 6th 2001 (target Sigma Gem,OBS_ID
0111480101) which was processed with SAS version 5.3.3 on 2002/06/05.

A few days a go I compared the old effective area curves of the response
matrix produced by the pipeline, to new ones produced by another SAS
version 5.3.3 but probably with updated calibration files (on the same
observation files).

There is a large difference between the two effective area curves (see
attached plot).

Is there a degradation in the effective area over time and if so, does
SAS take the observation date into account when generating the
responses?

thanks

Raanan Nordon,

Dear Dr. Nordon,

SAS does not include any correction for loss of sensitivity of the RGS response
with time (since no significant degradation have been observed so far).

I assume that you are processing the data with the same SAS version (5.3.3), but
with different ccfs, and that when you talk about the 'pipeline', you are
referring to the
SAS tasks 'rgsproc' or 'rgsrmfgen'.

Without knowing details of the processing, I can think of several reasons for
the difference in esffective area you report:

- use of different calibration files (to check that you should compare the
ccf.cif files used in both cases)

- use of different extraction regions for the spectrum (i.e. percent of PSF for
source spectrum and for background subtraction).

I strongly suggest you to re-process the data with the newest SAS version (6.0)
which includes a new version of the RGS response generation task 'rgsrmfgen'.

Regards,

                   Rosario Gonzalez-Riestra
