I'd like to generate OM PSFs to use for fitting models to OM images.  I am
specifically interested in U and UVW2 PSFs.  At first I proceeded by using
scisim after adjusting the pixelSize by a factor of 4 to get ~ 0.5" pixels that
match well with the hi-res images.  I just noticed that the osim guide says that
the detectorFWHM param. should also be adjusted, presumably by the same factor. 
However I am confused about why these parameters are not any different when
different filters are selected in the om configuration dialog since the PSFs are
known to be somewhat different for the different bands.  Should the FWHM param
(or params?) for osim also be adjusted after selecting a different filter?  It
looks like changing the filter selection for osim only changes the count rate,
not the psf.  Also, is the psf in scisim 3.0.0 based on prelaunch values?  If
so, would I be better off using something else, e.g., coming up with a Gaussian
that results in a cummulative PSF similar to those shown in
CAL-SRN-0119-1-2.ps?

Dear Andy, 

If you are interested in OM PSFs, you may want to use directly those described
in CCF 

ftp://xmm.vilspa.esa.es/pub/ccf/constituents/OM_PSF1DRB_0006.CCF

However, the PSFs in that file are still pre-flight for some filters. According
to OM calibration scientists, a new version (OM_PSF1DRB_0008.CCF) with in-flight
PSF for all filters will be released in few weeks.

If you are still interested in SciSim, note that the filter choice only affects
to the "effective area", that is count rate, but not to PSF width which needs to
be set manually for each filter. Note also (Tips and Tricks seciont of osim
manual) that SciSim does not simulate the centroiding actually performed
on-board.
