I was wondering how to convert count rate (cts/s) into X-ray photon flux
(photons/s/cm^2) for XMM Newton.

I have a non-detection from which I can calculate an upper-limit count rate
using the SAS "eregionanalyse" tool, and I would like to convert this value into
more astrophysical units. I've filtered events for pattern and energy range
using "evselect".

Is there a formula to do this? Also, how do I use SAS to calculate the relevant
quantities, such as telescope vignetting, etc?

Dear Michael Kuhn,

 there are a few ways to estimate fluxes from count rates:

One is to use the plots in the User Handbook:

Also the Flix Server can be used to check, for a given sky location, whether
XMM-Newton has observed that region of the sky and if so, determine XMM-Newton
upper limits, X-ray fluxes, and create image cut-outs:
