Hello,

I have been trying to run the images_script command and something keeps going
wrong. We have searched but we can't figure out what the problem is. Here is the
message that prints when it runs (running from within the data directory)

Hi Kelsey,

Unfortunately we have not been able to reproduce the error reported. But, as the
complaint is about the parameters in tabgtigen, we would suggest you modify the
script such that these lines:

#produce pn gti file
PN_expr=expression="RATE<=$pngtirate"
evselect table=PN.fits withrateset=Y rateset=ratePN.fits \
 maketimecolumn=Y timebinsize=100 makeratecolumn=Y \
 expression='#XMMEA_EP && (PI>=10000) && (PI<=12000)
&& (PATTERN==0)' >>
${objectname}_PNgti.log
tabgtigen table=ratePN.fits $PN_expr gtiset=PNgti.fits >>
${objectname}_PNgti.log
cp -f PNgti.fits $directory

with

#produce pn gti file
PN_expr="RATE<=$pngtirate"
evselect table=PN.fits withrateset=Y rateset=ratePN.fits \
 maketimecolumn=Y timebinsize=100 makeratecolumn=Y \
 expression='#XMMEA_EP && (PI>=10000) && (PI<=12000)
&& (PATTERN==0)' >>
${objectname}_PNgti.log
tabgtigen table=ratePN.fits expression=$PN_expr gtiset=PNgti.fits >>

cp -f PNgti.fits $directory

Do you have any other ideas? Should I try to download HEASOFT from the

Hi,

main problem still seems to be in the construction of command tabgtigen. Will
you please give another try with following change in tabgtigen line

tabgtigen table=ratePN.fits expression="$PN_expr" gtiset=PNgti.fits -V 10
>>
${objectname}_PNgti.log

and send us the log (${objectname}_PNgti.log) of the task?

Hi Kelsey,

it seems the error is caused by some extra character (line-break) in the
images_input file, likely introduced by a GUI text editor.

In your log file Abell209d_PNgti.log you may see that 2nd line is truncated
right after 0.4. The reason is a linebreak character, shown as ^M in some
editors. Such character is passed to the tabgtigen task and makes it to fail.

If you have not edited the images_input file, the control character might have
been introduced if the file has been browsed before saving to disk. In this
case, please try to download the tar file

http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_science/gallery/utils/images.tar.gz

directly to disk, and then, from the command line, untar it with tar -zxvf

Sincerely,

Pedro

Okay, the tabgtigen error is gone but it still is having trouble generating
the gti's. I'm attaching the MOS1 log this time, not sure if it will help.

Hello,

I'm sorry please ignore that last email, we did a little bit more poking
around after I sent it. We found a SAS library that was missing and
installed it. Here is the new error and the log files. The gti log files
are empty so they are not attached.

Hello,

there seem to be some problems with paths or files. The errors reported in your
previous message indicate that rate filtering results in empty events files,
therefore, any image created later will only have 0's.

In your second mail, the script cannot find some files (attitude and events
list) that should have been produced in a previous step by epchain. It seems
that PN data are being ignored/missed. Please, check that the folders below

/Users/kelseyfunkh/Research/data/abell209/

do contain the files listed in sect. 6 of README.pdf file. If there is a
mismatch, please, send *.log files.

Pedro

Hi,

There are only 3 files in the PN directory,

abell209_epchain_1.log abell209_epchain_2.log ccf.cif

It was making all of the files before, I don't know what changed.

The MOS1&2 directories contain everything that is on the list. The
final_images directory has always been empty, every time I have run it. I'm
attaching the two PN log files, let me know if you need any other ones.

Thank you!
Kelsey

Hi,

if you have a look to the log files you will see that there is a problem with
the path to perl and , consequently, epchain script is not executed. Which is
quite remarkable, because the sas script to produce MOS data, namely emchain,
seems have worked.

Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to check in detail which the exact
setup in your computer, therefore I would suggest you either go through a
careful revision of the computer configuration in relation to SAS or make a
fresh installation of SAS, In any case, I would also suggest to remove all files
that images script might have created to make sure that images is not affected
by old files from previous executions.

Sincerely,

Pedro
