Dear Mainpal,

actually there is no significant difference between these two versions of the
EPIC processing meta-tasks; having both of them is mainly for 'historical'
reasons:
the *chain tasks are maintained by the instrument teams and allow the
generation of intermediate (more diagnostic) products; the *proc tasks are
maintained by our SOC SAS team; originally they had the advantage
of keeping data in memory and hence being in some cases significantly faster
(I think with the advancement of computing power this is in most cases no
longer
an issue).

Having said this, using both versions will generate the same (within
randomization uncertainties) calibrated EPIC event lists.

Actually I am only aware of one important difference, namely that you need
to run epchain if a correction for so-called out-of-time events is needed, see
http://xmm.esac.esa.int/sas/current/documentation/threads/EPIC_OoT.shtml

Regards,
  Matthias
