We have started reducing the set of 12 XZ Tau observations performed by XMM
between the 4 and 10 of March. We have a problem in running the SAS pipeline on
the last observation, ID: 0200811301. We tried SAS versions 6.0.0 and 5.4.1. In
both cases we get a warning from odfingest and then errors from epchain and
emchain. See attached log-files for details (runpipe1301.log, out.epchain,
out.emchain). Attached is also the script (runpipe_new) that we use to run the
pipeline. The output PN event file that we obtain is incomplete, with half of
the detector missing.

Can you help us?

		Best regards,
			Giovanna Giardino

PS So far we have reduced 8 out of 12 observations of the XZ Tau field and
encountered problems only with this.

Dear Giovanna

I have tried to process your data myself to see where your problem is.

The warnings of the odfingest are only warnings. However, I do get
some errors with ep/m proc and have not found the error in the
documentation

I will ask SAS experts about the problem, but after doing the processing,
I have realized that the observation had to be stopped due to radiation and
that only 235 sec were collected for the EPIC-pn instrument. Therefore the
data is probably of not much use.

Please let me know if you still want to analyse the data or not

With best wishes

Maria

That's probably true, however we would still be interested to know why the
pipeline does not complete correctly. Please let us know if you get to the
bottom of it.

Best regards,

Dear Giovanna

With regard to your question:

I got the following from the SAS experts:

The so-called non-periodic HK packets contain important information about the
instrument configuration. They are telemetered at least with a frequency of ~ 1
/ 10 minutes. During the 253 s of this unusually short exposure not all of them
were present, therefore the configuration of the instrument is partly unknown.

Although the problem can be circumvented in principle, it is surely not worth
the effort.

I hope this is what you wanted to know.

With best regards

Maria
