Hi,

I am following the procedure to generate the light curves given in this link :
https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-thread-timing

Now, when I am using the epiclccorr task to extract the background subtracted
light curve using the command :
epiclccorr srctslist=PN_source_lightcurve_raw.lc eventlist=PN_evt.fits
outset=PN_lccorr.lc bkgtslist=PN_light_curve_background_raw.lc withbkgset=yes
applyabsolutecorrections=yes

I am not getting a subtracted light curve. Means, the count in the output file
is more than the count in the source+background raw light curve file. Clearly
this is doing something different. What could be the possible reasons for that?
Could you inform how to get the proper background subtracted light curve.

Dear Simone,

I am sending here the log file for extracting the MOS1 lightcurves. I have done
the filtering of flaring background and then proceeded with barycentric
correction to generate the light curves from the MOS1 image.
I am also sending you the plots of the lightcurve where you can see the counts
of corrected lightcurve (3rd panel) is more than the source+background counts
(1st panel). There is the problem of using epiclccorr.

Kind Regards,

Tanuman Ghosh

Dear Tanuman Ghosh,

epiclccorr, with its default parameters i.e. with Absolute Correction, performs
a number of
calibrations and corrections besides the subtruction of the background. Please
read the
description:

https://xmm-tools.cosmos.esa.int/external/sas/current/doc/epiclccorr/node3.html

I notice that the source that you are analysing is not on axis. Especially in
these cases, if the
Absolute Correction is applied (as is the case), we do expect that the corrected
count rate is higher
than the one extracted directly from the image. If you don't want to apply the
absolute correction,
you can switch it off using the parameter: applyabsolutecorr=N
Please check all the information and parameters here:

https://xmm-tools.cosmos.esa.int/external/sas/current/doc/epiclccorr/epiclccorr.html

I hope it helps,
Kind regards
Simone
