Dear XMM Helpdesk,

In the SAS thread "Extraction of MOS spectra from point-like sources taken in
timing mode" at step 7, the source spectrum is extracted using 'evselect' with
'(PATTERN<=0)' in the value given to the 'expression' parameter while, on the
other hand the background spectrum is extracted using '(PATTERN<=1 ||
PATTERN==3)'.

Why is that? Why does not one use the same PATTERN values for both the source
and the background spectra, in the same way as for extracting pn spectra from
point-like sources taken in timing mode?

In MOS Timing Mode, physical pixels are binned together in the Y direction.
This leads to Timing Mode single pixel events being comprised of the equivalent
Imaging Mode patterns 0 (single pixel events), 1 and 3 (double pixel events
aligned
in the Y direction).

As the MOS background spectrum is recommended to be taken from peripheral CCDs,
which are operated in Imaging Mode, this equivalent pattern selection should be
made.
