Dear helpdesk:

                        I'm analysis XMM data (obsid 0074140201) and 
found that if i plot the rate of the PN camera, i found flares
that i have to exclude during my analysis (extraction of the energy 
spectrum). However, when i check the rates for the MOS camera,
i find the flares are much less prominent, which make me wonder if i 
have to take the whole time interval or not.

For the PN camera, i exlude data above 1 count/sec (as it is suggested 
in the manual)
but what should i do for the MOS if i get a complete different count rate.

p.d. I include the PN.ps and the MOS.ps that i get using SAS
with
#XMMEA_EM && (PI>10000) && (PATTERN==0)

and in both cases, i use a 10 seconds binning.

Dear Diego,

the MOS observations in ObsId 0074140201 were performed in Timing mode.
So you have for both MOS cameras two event lists: one from CCD1 only
with data collected in timing mode and from the outer CCDs a combined
event lists in imaging mode.

You can use the data from the outer CCDs to generate the rate curves
for MOS1 and MOS2 and you will get a very similar plot to the one for
pn. Based on these imaging mode rate curves, you can define GTIs
and apply them to the timing mode event lists of the MOS CCD1s.
