Dear XMM helpdesk,
In an attempt to obtain out of FOV events I ran emchain on my
XMM-Newton data.

"emchain -V 5 > emchai.log"

The procedure terminated with:

"emchain: BEWARE: One or more of the tasks ended in error !"

The following files are created:
7 event0#.in.mos files (where #=1 to 7),
4 P0201670101*.FIT files and
1 (empty) errors file.
When displayed individually the events files look ok;
they look like data for individual CCDs with out of FOV data present.
They have no WCS (when I image the events with xmmselect).

In the log file, I see that "emframes" runs, then the following error
message occurs:

"emchain: That task ended in error !"

There is no iindication that I can see to pinpoint why the task ends in
error.
There are no errors prior to this, other than the certain files in the
odf are listed as:

" not M1 M2"

which makes sense since they are PN, RGS etc files.

Please would you advise me on what could be going wrong for emchain not
to complete sucessfully?
I have FTOOLS installed (heasoft6.0linux_pc.tar).
I am using SAS release: xmmsas_20041122_1834-6.1.0 on a Linux work
station.

Regards,
 Anne

Hello Nora,
In attempts to try to track down our problem with emchain, Andy Read at
Leicester University
has kindly run e*chain for me on one observation. With their set-up it
works fine:
They are using the same SAS release as us, but an earlier version of
HEASARC software
(5.2 instead of the currently available 6.0). Could this be the
problem? If so, is it possible
to download an earlier version of the HEASARC software from the web?

Further investigations showed that I can run epchain, without errors,
and get out of FOV
events here ok. Our problem appears to be isolated to emchain. Epchain
did not seem to
require any FTOOLS software, whereas emchain does (at least fkeyprint).

Hope you can shed some light on this.
Is there an alternative to emchain, for getting out of FOV events?
My concern though is that other things may also be going wrong with the
software,
which are less obvious, but could result in errors in the data
handling.

Regards,
  Anne

Hello Anne,

here are the comments about your problem by MOS calibration scientist:

It is correct that the emchain is using some of the ftools, so depends
on the HEASOFT versions. I processed the ODF of observation rev. 0838 ID
0201670101 using emchain and heasoft6.0 without problems. If required we
could deliver the file via the ftp area.

The task emproc does not use HEASOFT. The emproc will also keep out-FOV
events if the expression emproc filterexpression='FLAG & 766aa000' is
used. But for the current version of the SAS it is recommended to use
emchain, because emchain supports the MOS specific task embadpixfind,
whereas emproc is using the general task badpixfind. For the next
version of the SAS the task emproc and emchain will be equivalent.

Summary:
- emchain is the task that should be used for MOS extraction
- emchain is working with HEASOFT 6.0
- if required we can provide eventlist files.

Hello Nora,
 Thank you for your reply.
However, this doesn't help us to isolate why we can't run emchain here
at UCLancs.
Is there no way to find out whay emchain is failing here? Some
diagnostics from high
verbosity log files perhaps? Do I need to add any qualifiers to the
emchain command,
to ensure correct parameter settings? I can email a log file if this
would help?

 Regards,
  Anne

Hello Anne,

here is the reply by the calibration scientist:

"At first sight this doesn't seem related to the FTOOLS (the error seems to
occur in emframes) but it is hard to tell because the error messages (STDERR
output) were not recorded.

Please ask her to copy the errors to the log, as in
emchain stoponerror=Y > emchain.log 2>&1
The redirection syntax is for Unix/sh, it must be adapted to the local
environment.

This should tell us precisely where the problem is."

Hello Nora,
I used the following commands on a linux pc:

sh
emchain stoponerror=Y > emchain.log 2>&1

The log file is attached as a word document below.
I can't see any further error details in it myself.
Do you have any further suggestions for how the error could be tracked
down?
Please can you let me know if I should be using a specific verbosity
level, and the command to use?
Thanks,
  Anne

indeed the logfile doesn't contain the expected error message.

Hello Anne,

indeed the logfile doesn't contain the expected error message.

We see two possibilities:
1) there was no error message: that would be really surprising.
Error messages are highest priority and are reported at any verbosity level, so
verbosity level 5 as used is enough. If there really is no error message at all
(none on the screen, too), then a higher verbosity level could provide more
information where the task failed.

2) the re-direction of the STDERR didn't work.
In this case we should try to repeat the extraction again with one of these
commands in the usual shell used for the extraction:

for csh:
emchain stoponerror=Y >& emchain.log

for ksh or bash:
emchain stoponerror=Y > emchain_stdout.log 2> emchain_stderrout.log

If there is any more output on the screen, please copy it into a file, too. A
Xterm with scroll bar could be generated with the command:
xterm -sb -sl 1000 &
If necessary the scroll bar could be enlarged by increasing the number.

Best,

Nora

Hello Anne,

the software developers would like to ask you if you can provide further
information about the problem you reported. Could you please repeat the
extraction again with one of these commands in the usual shell used for the
extraction?:

for csh:
emchain stoponerror=Y >& emchain.log

for ksh or bash:
emchain stoponerror=Y > emchain_stdout.log 2> emchain_stderrout.log

If there really is no error message at all (none on the screen, too), then a
higher verbosity level than 5 could provide more information where the task
failed.
If there is any more output on the screen, please copy it into a file, too. A
Xterm with scroll bar could be generated with the command:
xterm -sb -sl 1000 &
If necessary the scroll bar could be enlarged by increasing the number.

Hello Nora,
Apologies for the delay in replying. Our system had a hard drive failure
and all the XMM SAS software was lost from it. I have had to re-install it
all, which takes some time.
When I now try emchain the response is:

aes:dl9:~/XMM/NGC4382/0201670101/ > emchain
emchain: Command not found.

So, I can't help you at the moment with further information.
Has the emchain command be removed from the SAS software package,
or am I forgetting something?
The above was immediately after running xmmselect sucessfully, to
check that the SAS software was re-installed OK, which it appears to be.

Will a new version of emchain (or some other facility to sort out-of-field
events) become available in future releases of the SAS software? Such a
facility is needed to be able to investigate background issues (particles
vs photons etc.)

Regards,
   Anne

Hello Anne,

I hope that by now the SAS installation is ok. In the present version both
emchain and emproc should be available, in some cases they may have slightly
different facilities, like for the OoF events. In next SAS version (6.5) both
will be able to do exactly the same, producing exactly the same results.
