Dear Helpdesk,

I'm analysing MOS data in Small Window mode. The source is bright and there is
no obvious region for the background extraction, free from contamination of the
source flux. I would like to use the EPIC background blank field files from
ftp://xmm.vilspa.esa.es/pub/ccf/constituents/extras/background/, however these
are not conceived for Small Window mode as far as I know. How would you suggest
to proceed to extract the background in this case?

Thanks for the help,
Elisa

Dear Elisa,

it is better that you do not use the blank field files from
ftp://xmm.vilspa.esa.es/pub/ccf/constituents/extras/background/,
these files are intended for extended regions where there is no other way to
estimate the background, they do not take into account sky variations.
In your case it is recommended that you estimate your background from the
peripheral CCDs.

Best regards,

Nora
