Subject: arfgen problem
Full_Name: Sean Hendrick
Submission from: (NULL) (152.1.138.201)

Hi,
I am reducing obsid 0156560101, SNR DEM L238, and attempting to create the arf
files for my spectra. Working with PN data everything was fine. However,
attempting to create the arfs for the MOS1 and MOS2 spectra I get :
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

The arfgen run fails for both when attempting to access CCF file
EMOS2_FILTERTRANSX_0011.CCF or,
EMOS1_FILTERTRANSX_0011.CCF

Examining the output with verbosity set to 8 gives the following:
arfgen:- Attempting to open the fits file with name
'/spot/sphendri/0049-xmmdata/0110000101/CCF/EMOS1_FILTERTRANSX_0011.CCF'. If
successful there will be 2 fits files currently open.
arfgen:- Reading data for column with qualified name
/spot/sphendri/0049-xmmdata/0110000101/CCF/EMOS1_FILTERTRANSX_0011.CCF:EBINS:ENERGY
(column number is 0) from row 0 to row 1056
arfgen:- Data for column with qualified name
/spot/sphendri/0049-xmmdata/0110000101/CCF/EMOS1_FILTERTRANSX_0011.CCF:EBINS:ENERGY
(column number is 0) from row 0 to row 1056 is read-only, and will not be
written back to disk.
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

I have successfully generated arf file for MOS data with 2 other datasets (one
more recent, and one older observation), SNR 0520-69.2 obsid 0204770101, and
archival data of SNR 0049-73.6 obsid 0110000101, without difficulty using the
same CCF files. I double checked my spectra file for the correcting binning and
found no problems. What is causing this failure?

Thanks,
Sean Hendrick

Hi,
I created 12 different spectra from the data, so I will just send
you a sample. One from MOS1 and one from MOS2. If you need to see the
others, let me know.

Thanks,
Sean

Dear Sean,

The problem for arfgen is that your spectra correspond to MOS exposures with
filter CLOSED. The CCF constituents do not contain the information for this
filter.

Exposures with filter CLOSED are indeed calibration observations. The photons
coming from the sky are effectively blocked out of the detectors. In the
observation of DEM L238 there are some MOS and pn exposure with the CLOSED
filters that have no scientific use (see
http://xmm.vilspa.esa.es/obs-public/obs_view.tcl?search_rev=&search_ra=&search_target=&search_obs_start=&search_obs_id=0156560101&search_dec=&search_pi=&search_obs_end=&search_prop=&search_radius=&search_category=0&search_order_by=3&search_instrument=0&action=Get+Selection)

Sincerly,

Pedro
