Hi,
  I am attempting to process a data set for which there were telemetry
problems, but for which an ODF was eventually generated. We were told we
could try to process the data ourselves.

I've attached the outputs of my epchain runs (with SAS_VERBOSITY = 5) to
this email, but here is a summary. I am using SAS 7.3

When I first ran epchain, I got the following errors
(epchain_initial.output)

** : warning (TooFewTimeCorrelationDataPoints), Number of time correlation

atthkgen: warning (NoAttributesAdded), Only 0 data points are available -
cannot do a fit to a polynomial of degree 1 - no new attributes will be
added to data set

and no events list was generated.

Reading through some old submissions to the helpdesk, I saw an email
exchange (PR#20538) about a data set that also suffered from telemetry
problems and this error occurred. It was suggested to remove the TCX.FIT
file and then rerun odfingest and continue. In that case this seemed to do
the trick.

When I ran epchain again (epchain_no_tcx.output) it still didn't work.
This time I obtained the following error:

** atthkgen: warning (NoAttributesAdded), No satisfactory fit found after
removing 90% of the data points - no new attributes will be added to data
set
** epframes: error (UnsuccessfulFit), No satisfactory fit found after
removing 90% of the data points

I didn't find any email exchanges about this particular problem though.

I also tried starting a new SAS session and re-doing the cifbuild and
odfingest, but got the same result.

I'm wondering if there are any other temporary solutions we could try,
just so we can get a sense of what these data are like. We were told that
the pipeline processing would not be done for some time because there is a
lot of effort going into the new pipeline. Rita Sambuna and I are anxious
to see what this exploratory observation has given us before the next
proposal cycle. Thanks for any help you can give us. Please let me know if

First, let me remark the following paragraph included in a previous message sent
to Rita:

  We stress that XMM-Newton data is not scientifically validated
  before pipeline products are delivered by SSC, nor it is assured
  that the current SAS version supports the analysis of all data
  contained in the ODF. The analysis of data which have not
  passed the pipeline processing can only be supported in a very
  limited way via the XMM-Newton helpdesk.

Note that XMM-Newton engineers and SAS specialists are currently analysing the
problems with the telemetry occured during the observation; unfortunately, the
solution is not ready yet.

Nevertheless, there is a way to make epchain run to the end, producing a
filtered events file suitable to produce images/spectra/light curves. But, we
**DO NOT** guarantee the quality, especially the timing accuracy, of such
filtered events file and the products obtained out of it. It only may be useful
for a quick-look test on the type of analysis that might be possible on the true
pipeline products.

I am attaching some commands intended to replace the TCS/TCX files included in
the ODF currently available in XSA by a "dummy" TCS file. I am assuming your ODF
is  0402780101.tar.gz and you have properly setup SAS.

Please, bear in mind that the scientific validity of the products obtained in
this way is by no means guaranteed. We strongly encourage you to wait for PPS
products before drawing any scientific result.

    Thank you for your quick reply and the suggested fix!  I ran into a 
few problem with missing keywords in some files, but after adding them 
in,  it seems to have worked.  We greatly appreciate the time you took 
to reply, even though these data are not officially supported.  We are 
aware that these data are not robust, out only purpose is a quick look 
so that we know if further observations of this object are warranted. 
We look forward to receiving the "official" data.
