Dear SAS team,

I am using the task "comb" to generate combined PN+MOS1+MOS2 object image,
modelled background image and exposure map. The combined exposure map generated
here takes the effects of vignetting, efficiency etc. into account. I would like
to estimate the typical background surface brightness in the combined data in
units of cts/s/deg^2. If possible, I would also like an estimate of the error on
this value. How can this be done? I have the combined background image but since
the exposure map is not uniform, can I use an average value from the map to get
a rough estimate of the background surface brightness?

Dear Juhi,

the use of an average value for the full EPIC field of view will largely depend
on the particular problem to address. For spatial scales comparable to the field
of view, it will might not be a good approximation.

Dear Juhi,

unfortunately, I do not quite understand what is the actual problem and its
context you want to address.

There is a section about how to deal with extended sources in our SAS Users
guide (https://xmm-tools.cosmos.esa.int/external/xmm_user_support/documentation/sas_usg/USG/epicextendedsrc.html)
and a web page dedicated to EPIC background
(https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/background) where you may find some
descriptions and tools.
