Subject: EPIC background files
Dear XMM Helpdesk,

I have a question regarding the use the "blank sky" background images. I
am analyzing data taken in SW mode (pn and MOS) and would like to use the
black sky field data (available from
http://xmm.vilspa.esa.es/ccf/epic/#background) to produce a background
spectrum. However, these files seem rather old (Jan 2002) and so
presumably these data were processed with an older version of the SAS.

The recent SAS/Cal releases contain several updates (eg: the EPIC CTI
correction). Is there a compatibility issue using these old background
files with source data extracted using the latest SAS? (Eg: the source
background spectra would have different CTI corrections.)

Regards,

Simon

Dear Simon,

your question has been forwarded to EPIC/SAS experts. As soon as I have got
their reply I will pass it to you.

Sincerely,

Pedro

Dear Simon,

According to the Calibration Scientist, the currently available background files
are NOT applicable to data processed with SAS5.4. We expect to make available
new (improved) background datasets compatible with SAS5.4. Unfortunately, I
cannot give you a date now. Sorry.

Sincerely,

Pedro
