Subject: Question about high background periods
To: xmmhelp@xmm.vilspa.esa.es
Hello,
I am analyzing archival data of one observation affected by high
background periods. What is strange is that MOS1 and MOS2 data appears to
be affected by background in a different way. That is, by inspecting the
lightcurves at energies > 10 keV, the MOS1 shows a clear increase of count
rates up to several counts per seconds, while MOS2 reached at maximum
0.25-0.3 c/s, that is below the threshold suggested in the latest EPIC
calibration report. I processed the data with SAS 6.0, 6.1, and 6.5, and I
always obtained the same result.

I would like to know if it is possible that MOS1 and MOS2 shows such
different behaviour with respect to high background periods.

Thank you very much in advance.
Greetings,

Luigi

Dear Dr. Foschini,

Could you please send un the observation Id of the data you are analyzing?

Thanks in advance,

Dear Luigi,

The difference in the background lightcurves of MOS1 and MOS2 is due to the use
of different blockings filter, 'Thin' for MOS1 and 'Thick' for MOS2.

Please let me know if you have any further question,

Regards

                  Rosario
